Shameika Williams, EdD, MPH is the featured presenter at a November 15 seminar hosted by the University at Albany’s Maternal and Child Health Program.
Dr. Williams is a faculty fellow with our MCH Faculty Development Fellowship Program at Diverse Institutions. One of the focuses of her talk will be her fellowship-supported work at SUNY Old Westbury to expand the university’s MCH offerings.
Seminar Description
The title of the seminar is “Expanding MCH Capacity at a Minority-Serving Institution through Curriculum Enhancements and Community Interventions.”
Dr. Williams will share:
- How SUNY Old Westbury, a minority-serving institution, is working to expand their MCH offerings through both curriculum enhancements and future and current community interventions.
- Information on their new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid funded initiative to expand services in communities in Queens, New York to reduce the number of pregnant and/or postpartum individuals who are uninsured or go without needed medical care, to expand access to health care and support for expectant families, and to diversify the lactation field.
Presenter Bio
Dr. Williams started her career in public health in 2008 and prior to joining Old Westbury, she was a Research Scientist at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Williams has led initiatives that focused on advancing health and birth equity at organizations such as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Columbia University, and Northwell Health. Her current research interests include examining the impact of carceral systems on maternal child health outcomes and examining the impact of structural racism on breastfeeding and birth outcomes. Dr. Williams has led initiatives that focused on advancing health and birth equity at organizations such as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Columbia University, and Northwell Health. She is also a Certified Lactation Counselor, Community Breastfeeding Educator, and is formally trained as a Community Health Worker.
