The Application Process

Application period from Oct. 10 – Nov. 14, 2022

The National Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Workforce Development Center will accept applications for the Title V MCH Internship Program from Oct 10 – Nov. 14, 2022. At least ten teams of MCH Trainees will participate in internships in Title V programs over the summer of 2023. Each two-person team will consist of a graduate MCH student (from a Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health) and an MCH student from either an Maternal and Child Health Leadership, Education, and Advancement in Undergraduate Pathways (LEAP) Training Program or from an MCH graduate Public Health Catalyst program.

State and jurisdictional Title V agencies are invited to submit projects for student teams to complete over the course of 10 weeks during summer 2023.

Why apply to host a team of students as part of the Title V MCH Internship Program?

Enhance your agency’s capacity to complete a project or task:

  • Get help in moving a strategy forward, or in making progress on an activity that’s been on the ‘back burner’
  • Gain student support to design a survey, conduct key informant interviews, complete a literature review, analyze results of focus groups, or develop evidence for a strategic plan
  • Benefit from the leadership and professional development training provided by internship staff to Title V MCH Interns

Identifying a project for a student team

Sometimes it can be difficult to think of a project appropriate for students. In Summer 2022, your state or jurisdiction might want to consider projects related to implementation of your action plan, including your evidence-based strategies. Consideration of how projects address equity and how Title V can center equity and consumer/family engagement in its efforts is also important.

If you are having trouble fleshing out a project but know you would like to participate, please reach out.  We can set up a phone call to discuss how you can turn your ideas into a meaningful project for a team of MCH student interns for the summer of 2023.

  • Do you need help with stakeholder interviews, focus groups with key constituencies, or gathering additional secondary data beyond what is provided to you by MCHB?
  • Which evidence-based strategies are already started? Is help needed to move a particular strategy along? Do you need a plan for one aspect of a strategy? An evaluation plan or implementation plan? A mini-needs assessment? A review of what other states are doing?
  • Which evidence-based strategies are on the back burner because you don’t have the resources you need to get them started? Are there any strategies for which you need to collect background information, gather evidence from the peer-reviewed literature, or seek input from stakeholders and/or partners?
  • Is there a project or series of projects related to one of the National Performance Measures that need(s) to be jump-started? Could you use a team of MCH students to help you design a survey, conduct key informant interviews, analyze results of focus groups, or develop the evidence for a strategic plan, etc.?

IF YOU CAN ANSWER YES TO ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE QUESTIONS,
YOU ARE READY FOR A TITLE V MCH INTERNSHIP TEAM!!!

Expectations of Title V agencies hosting students for the Title V MCH Internship

  • Student teams will participate in at least one collaborative well-defined project at the agency.
  • Students may participate in additional individual projects as time, resources, and interest allow.
  • At least one preceptor will be available to meet with student teams on a regular basis. This might mean that a team of preceptors is established due to the need to accommodate busy schedules and summer vacations.
  • Title V staff will provide students with an orientation on the agency/Title V program before the end of their second internship week.
  • Students will be given opportunities to attend a variety of meetings and events taking place at the Title V Agency and/or with partners of the Title V Agency.
  • If students will be expected to interview stakeholders or partners, arrangements are made ahead of time to ensure that students are supported in this process.
  • Students will be provided with access to the resources needed to complete their projects.
